Tesla is reportedly behind on its pledge to build 5,000 Optimus bots this year

Tesla is reportedly lagging behind on its goal to produce 5,000 Optimus humanoid robots by the end of this year, The Information reports. As of late July 2025, only several hundred units have been completed, according to two individuals familiar with the matter. The company may now be forced to either increase output or delay its target.

This comes shortly after Tesla reported a 12% year-over-year revenue decline in the second quarter, citing lower EV sales, fewer regulatory credits, and weaker solar and storage figures. On a recent earnings call, Elon Musk said production of the Optimus 3 version is scheduled to begin in early 2026.

Musk added that Tesla hopes to eventually produce one million Optimus robots annually within the next five years — a goal he called achievable.

Historically, Musk has issued similarly aggressive timelines. He previously announced plans for a million robotaxis by 2020 and later promised mass production by 2024 — milestones that remain unmet.
