Amazon disputes report that it raised prices of popular items since Trump took office
Amazon has criticized a Wall Street Journal investigation into its pricing, saying the newspaper’s findings misrepresent the impact of tariffs on consumer goods. The WSJ report claimed that prices for 2,500 basic items rose an average of 5% between January 20, when President Trump took office, and July 1.
The paper’s list included products like cough drops and antibacterial wipes. Amazon countered that some cited price hikes were due to sales ending, not tariff effects, naming Dove deodorant and Yogi Tea as examples.
Amazon emphasized its pricing model is dynamic and changes frequently, making point-in-time comparisons less reliable. The rebuttal comes as the company faces scrutiny over how trade policy shifts might affect costs.
Separately, government data shows a 0.3% monthly and 2.7% annual rise in U.S. consumer prices as of June, indicating a general upward trend in costs.
